University by the Sea's free events are open to the public and are great for kids of all ages. All events are located on Pine Avenue between 3rd Street and Broadway. Event times vary - please see the event listings below for more information.

Discover the film industry’s best up-and-coming filmmakers in this incredible series of film shorts.  Normally shown at the Director’s Guild of America, this year’s top CSULB film shorts will be shown to the public.  Audiences will vote by ballot for their favorite short, and the winning filmmaker will receive a $1,000 Audience Choice Award

Bill Viola, dubbed the “founder of video art,” will also show films prior to the announcement of the Audience Choice Award winner.

All films are shown outdoors on Pine Avenue, with comfortable Hollywood Bowl-style seating.  Grab a meal from one of Pine Avenue’s restaurants and enjoy a picnic with this great film showcase.  



Bring the kids for a fun, safe trick-or-treat at Pine Avenue’s restaurants and businesses.   Trick or treat maps and candy bags will be available at the U-Sea Ticket & Info booth on Pine Avenue.





Activate your life!  Discover salsa, tai chi, yoga and traditional Vietnamese dance in the “Dance & Demo Zone,” a ground-floor stage that lets you learn quick, easy introductory movements in today’s most popular martial arts and dance styles.  Classes are taught by trained instructors and experts. 

Each year, Cal State-Long Beach is flooded with over 30,000 visitors for “Kaleidoscope,” an interactive open house that gives you hands-on experience in dozens of subjects. 

Kaleidoscope’s top exhibits are coming to University by the Sea to teach you new phrases in foreign languages; incorporate you into group art projects; zen you with Japanese rock gardens; and bring out your inner rocket scientist with fun scientific experiments. 



Long Beach City College’s underwater robotics technicians will showcase an underwater robot in a fifteen-foot water tank, and they will give you the opportunity to test it yourself.   Ideal for kids of all ages - scuba gear not required! 


Stimulate your senses in the Live Arts Corridor where local artist create masterpieces before your very eyes!  Kids can learn how to make their own Halloween masks. 


Players from the Long Beach Armada Baseball team will be on hand to give lessons to throw a great baseball pitch.  Plus, you can practice – and measure the speed of your pitches - in the Armada’s pitch exhibit.  Don’t forget to sign up for free ticket give a ways to Long Beach Armada games!



Enjoy an eclectic blend of culture and music at the U-Sea Main Stage, sponsored by Pine@Sixth.  Dance across the world with U-Sea’s Flamenco Guitar & dance, an Irish combo, CSULB’s Jazz Ensemble and much more.

The World AIDS Day event begins in October with the launch an Art Contest, Project: Red Paint sponsored by JBrand Jeans.  The first round works of 30 pieces of art will be displayed as part of the University by the Sea at Doma Properties in the Walker Building (401 Pine Ave).

Discover the incredible variety of coffee bean flavors from around the world. Starbucks Coffee Masters and Baristas will lead you through coffee tastings and food pairings to help you match your roast with the ideal food partner.  



From ring toss to milk bottles, the golden-era of the Long Beach Pike is making a comeback.  Try your hand at several traditional carnival games located outside the Historic Jergins Tunnel on Pine Avenue (south of Ocean Boulevard).  Try hard enough, and you could win a Kewpie doll!
